The Transport Journal is the official publication of the European Institute of Transport Management. The Journal was established in 1942 and is the undisputed European transport publication covering land, sea, air and rail. The publication covers issues which concern the various areas of the ever-changing transport industry. It aims to give up-to-date information on events, new appointments and technologies which affect companies both on a domestic and international level.

Over the past eight months the airline business has deteriorated sharply. Record-high fuel prices have sent a handful of smaller carriers into bankruptcy; the slowing global economy is making it hard for airlines to raise fares to cover fuel costs. The Awards Issue 2008 examines the pressures and challenges facing the aviation industry at present as well as taking a look at the current situation of other sectors across the transport industry.

There is little doubt that 2008 will once again be a challenging
year for the transport industry. Higher operating costs, narrowing margins, the burden of rising fuel prices, globalisation and increased legislation will all continue to tax even the most optimistic fleet manager. In the Yearbook 2008, the Institute looks ahead to all these and other trends projected to occur throughout the year, setting them in the context of the developments seen in 2007.
