Due to a sluggish European economy, coupled with rising oil prices, the past few months have been an uncertain time for the automotive industry as a whole. As a result fleet managers have had to revaluate their transport solutions. A survey carried out buy the Institute of Transport Management, as part of its annual fleet research programme, discovered that almost half of those questioned, view finance as the most important criteria when buying. This is due in part to high petrol prices - which has resulted in many Fleet Managers cutting back on spending and realizing savings throughout other areas of their business.

autoXP - Excellence in Automotive Customer Service 2010 Award
Birmingham 27th April 2010 – Founded back in 1977, the Institute of Transport Management (ITM) exists to monitor and improve business standards in the transport industry. For the past three decades, Awards have been distributed across the different sectors to worthy recipients who have demonstrated the excellence of their products and services. A key criterion for success with the accreditation programme is customer service, which the Institute believes represents the overall ethos of the company and underlies all its operations and interactions. Thus all Awards carry the implication of top quality customer service. However, there is a dedicated category of customer service Awards designed to highlight those occasions on which superlative service delivery deserves to be recognised in and of itself. Today, therefore, the Institute is pleased to announce that autoXP has won the ‘Excellence in Automotive Customer Service 2010’ Award.

CAM - Best Automotive Education Programme 2010 Award
Birmingham 9th March 2010 – The primary aims of any business are to: build a solid client base; preserve brand integrity; increase turnover and market share; become the ‘best in class’; keep costs to a minimum; and maintain workplace health and safety – all with a view to establishing a sustainable, healthy level of productivity and profitability. The fulfillment of these ambitions depends in large part upon the ability and motivation of company personnel to complete the tasks appointed to them in a timely, efficient and effective manner – whether this involves critical decision-making or ground level actions. Staff capability can be improved significantly through the application of appropriate training techniques, requiring only a modest investment of time and money to reap long-term rewards.

Scottish Motor Auctions - Best Independent Vehicle Remarketing Company 2010
Birmingham 14th April 2010 – Last month the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) released figures for new car registrations which showed an improvement of 26.6 percent on March 2009 (totalling 397,383 units), of which 12.2 percent could be attributed to the scrappage scheme. Growth across all sales types was strong, and the SMMT predicts stability in the market post-scrappage scheme, with potential for a gradual increase in demand. However, headline registration figures are set to drop and the automotive industry will face a challenging few months. The situation in the van and truck market is overall rather negative; although the industry experienced its third successive month of growth, registrations were down 25 percent on the rolling year, with 38,900 units registered in March. Demand remains very low, with manufacturers, dealers and potential clients hoping for improved credit availability in the months ahead.

BCA - UK Vehicle Remarketing Company 2009 Award
Birmingham 23rd January 2009 – The suffering of the global automotive industry in the present economic crisis has been widely publicised, with regular reports of manufacturers cutting production and shedding jobs, new car dealers struggling to attract business and customers retaining ownership of existing vehicles for longer. In this commercial climate, the areas of the industry which stand the greatest chance of limiting the damage are the aftermarket and remarketing sectors, both spheres of business which tend to increase turnover in times of hardship.

Easi Drive - Nationwide Accident Management Specialist 2010 Award
Birmingham 23rd March 2010 – As UK roads groan under an ever increasing number of vehicles - whether private motor cars, vans or heavy goods vehicles - the volume of traffic incidents is rising proportionately. Already there are 10,000 breakdowns, scrapes and collisions reported each day. With these figures in mind, it is thus vital for both private motorists and fleet managers to ensure that they are protected against the fall-out from any mishap on the road. The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) is in the process of announcing its accreditations in the field of accident management and roadside assistance, having conducted extensive research on current service providers. Following the careful consideration of the Awards Committee, the Institute is hereby delighted to declare that Easi-Drive is the winner of the ‘Nationwide Accident Management Specialist 2010’ Award.

Europcar - 'UK Car Rental Company 2010’ Award
Birmingham 27th January 2010… Today’s car rental customer, whether corporate or private, demands both cost-effective and flexible services from providers. Despite having to watch the pennies at a time of economic struggle, customers are not willing to make significant compromises. It is a skilful rental company which manages to satisfy clients, steer between potential pitfalls and make a healthy profit in today’s market. The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) set about researching the offerings from major providers of rental services in the UK in a bid to identify the top performer across key criteria: cost-effectiveness, adaptability and customer service. Following the presentation of these findings to the ITM Awards Committee, Europcar was announced as the winner of the ‘UK Car Rental Company 2010’ Award.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car wins 'Corporate Car Rental Company 2010’ Award
Birmingham 29th January 2010… In the midst of a sluggish economy, fleet managers and fleet car drivers now more than ever require rental services which are flexible but do not come at a cost premium. The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) has been investigating current offerings on the market with a view to advising members on the top performers. The Institute examined the entire culture of the nominees, reviewing customer service standards, vehicle and site coverage, product value and overall professionalism. Having reviewed the findings of the research team, the ITM Awards Committee is hereby pleased to announce that the ‘Corporate Car Rental Company 2010’ Award goes to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, a previous winner of this title.

Mapfre Abraxas - ‘Motor Industry Company of the Year 2010’ Award
Birmingham 14th January 2010 – The automotive industry endured a tough year in 2009, although the volume of new car registrations exceeded expectations with a total of 1,994,999 units*. The higher than predicted figures were largely due to a late push arising from an extension of the scrappage scheme and a desire among consumers to preempt the restoration of the 17.5 percent VAT rate in January. Since its introduction, the scrappage scheme has accounted for more than one fifth of new car registrations as well as 20.8 percent of the December market. Registrations were nevertheless 6.4 percent down on last year, and marked the lowest level since 1995. Industry experts predict another difficult year ahead, with registrations potentially even lower than in 2009. SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt commented on prospects for 2010 as follows: “Sustaining the progress made in the latter part of 2009 will require stronger demand from fleet and business buyers, alongside the greater availability and affordability of credit and finance.”...

Jaama - ‘Fleet Software Company 2010’ Award
Birmingham 17th December 2010 - Even at the best of times fleet operators of all shapes and sizes are faced with an ongoing battle to suppress costs and improve efficiency. Managers must find the optimum means of minimising off-road time, maintaining contracts and building new business relationships, and thus maintain financial wellbeing. With the added pressures of a contracting economy, fleet managers need to be especially proactive in tackling these challenges. One option which can represent a good investment is an upgrade in fleet management software that can streamline risk, repair and claim processes, monitor running costs and analyse emissions, amongst other important functions. The Institute of Transport Management has undertaken extensive research in this field to identify those fleet management businesses which are offering the most effective IT packages for fleet operators. The Institute is thus pleased to announce that the winner of the ‘Fleet Software Company 2010’ title is multi-ITM Award winner Jaama.

JP Construction - ‘Automotive Construction Specialist Company 2010’ Award
Birmingham 13th November 2010 – The Institute of Management runs ones of the broadest transport industry accreditation programmes in Europe, covering not only all sectors but diverse categories within each sector. The research incorporates personnel, products, services and the broader context in which business takes place, such as economic development regions. At a local level, the success of a business depends not only on the staff and the products or services they promote, but the working environment which is experienced by employees and customers alike. In the automotive and aftermarket sectors, this includes dealerships and workshops – the subjects of a recent study by the Institute research team...

Experian - 'Dealer Vehicle Information Provider 2009’ Award
Birmingham 23rd July 2009 - For most people buying a car is likely to be one of the largest purchases they will make and as a result they want to be provided with reliable and accurate information before they go ahead. Most used car buyers who source their vehicle through a dealership believe that by doing so they are guaranteed that the car is fit for purpose and is exactly as described. Dealers’ reputations are founded on such expectations and to protect their brand they must ensure against any discrepancies between what is being advertised and what is actually for sale.

Kia Motors - 'UK Automotive Company 2010' Award
Birmingham 7th December 2009 – Research undertaken by the Institute of Transport Management (ITM) over the past 12 months suggests that the UK car market has turned the corner following the crisis of the recession. Whilst appreciating that car sales have been artificially inflated by the Government's scrappage scheme, senior Institute researchers are confident that the industry can look forward to significant recovery next year. For the rest of 2009, the car market will remain challenging though the effects of the scrappage scheme will continue to benefit the new car market and second hand car values are likely to remain strong. Furthermore, many dealers have streamlined their operations in reaction to the downturn, thus putting themselves in a strong position for the coming recovery.

autotorq.com - ‘Automotive Website Solutions Company 2009’ Award
Birmingham 28th July 2009 – The automotive industry has suffered difficult times over the past year, with the car-buying public and fleet operators curbing expenditure during a recession. The Government scrappage scheme has improved the situation somewhat, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reporting an upturn in vehicle registrations since June. However, dealers must not rely purely on Government measures but rather work towards improving their own services and corporate profile. Web-based marketing tools such as CRM packages and inventories can enhance sales through effective lead management, and thus make a significant impact on profitability...

Mammoth Cars - 'Independent Online Car Sales Portal 2009'
Birmingham 28th July 2009 – The internet has revolutionized the retail industry, enabling customers to investigate and compare the products on offer and make their purchases from the comfort of their homes. The automotive industry too has moved with the times, and there are a number of web-based programmes for dealers and websites for customers which are designed to boost convenience and speed of purchase while reducing cost. It is estimated that as many as 5 million potential car buyers in Britain now browse the internet in an effort to find the perfect vehicle for their purposes, meaning that there is a significant market for dealers to tap into...

Trimble - 'Mobile Resource Management Company 2009' Award
Birmingham 20th July 2009 – ‘Mobile Resource Management’ is a phrase that is familiar to every fleet operator, as a byword for the efficient control of fleet units. The concept is especially pertinent in today’s economic climate, when the costs of running a fleet are straining the budgets of companies which are struggling to weather the storm of the recession. By investing in mobile resource management technologies such as GPS and automated scheduling, businesses can significantly boost fleet efficiency - eliminating wasteful activities such as idling, excessive speeding and personal use of company vehicles. Efficiency savings also lead to cost savings, most notably by cutting fuel consumption – which has added benefits for the environment...

DSG Financial Services - ‘Dealer Finance Technology Product 2009’ Award
Birmingham 15th July 2009 – The publicity surrounding the current recession may have abated, but the effects of the credit crunch are still being felt across industry sectors. Yet there are encouraging signs that Government initiatives and recent shifts in global economics are taking the edge off current difficulties. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported a 15.7 percent decline in new car registrations in June, but this was the smallest drop since July 2008, which suggests that the scrappage scheme is indeed helping to boost sales. However, year-to-date demand is still down and previous levels of profitability lie some distance ahead. At this important point on the long road to economic recovery, it is critical that dealers and finance companies work together to offer appropriate packages to potential car buyers...

Citroen - ‘LCV of the Year 2009’ Award
Birmingham 24th June 2009 - While residual values on late well appointed models have been improving steadily over the past few months there is no getting around the fact that sales of new vans are down 33.9 percent for the rolling year. The Institute is of the opinion that both UK van and truck manufacturers will continue to face difficult times as businesses show little confidence in the prevailing economic conditions.

Fiat - 'Mini Category - Car of the Year 2009' Award
Birmingham 24th June 2009 – The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) has been conducting a spread of detailed research programmes into the automotive sector aimed at recognising the best manufacturers and models in the business. In the difficult economic conditions currently facing the automotive sector, the ITM Awards will benefit both companies and consumers by acting as beacons highlighting the best products in a struggling market. In the mini category, the key accreditation criteria include: fuel economy, carbon footprint, cost-effectiveness and overall aesthetic appeal...

Jaguar - 'Executive Car of the Year' Award
Birmingham 19th June 2009 – The past year has seen a tightening of corporate budgets as businesses adjust to the new economic situation. This includes spending on vehicle fleets, with companies looking to restrict unit options, delay acquisitions, offload excess vehicles and improve fuel efficiency amidst other cost-cutting measures. However, it is important not to take an economising strategy too far, as company cars represent an effective means of meeting transport requirements and help to attract the highest quality employees. At directorship level, it is necessary to keep investing in top range vehicles to ensure that the people who bear the greatest responsibility for the welfare of the company can go about their business in safety and security...

TOTAL - ‘Environmental Innovation Award 2009’

Birmingham 17th June 2009 – Awareness of environmental issues in business and among the general public has reached new heights as a result of a constant barrage of reports and studies into the contribution of human activity to climate change. In the fleet and automotive sectors, companies are facing strong pressure to develop products and systems which reduce emissions at the same time as maintaining high performance and productivity levels. As part of its fleet Awards programme, the Institute of Transport Management (ITM) has been investigating fuel cards as a means of reducing carbon emissions and increasing fleet efficiency. On the basis of information collected by the research team, the Awards Committee is hereby delighted to announce that TOTAL is to be presented with an ITM ‘Environmental Innovation Award 2009’ for its TOTALCARD green product.

The Awards act as beacons to those who have greatest need of these products and services: members of the Institute and other professionals in the transport industry...

Yuasa - 'Best Automitve Battery Range 2009' Award
Birmingham 10th June 2009 – The original equipment battery market was worth €856 million in 2007 across North America, Europe, Japan and China. Although battery manufacture is intimately linked with vehicle manufacture, and has thus been affected by the global recession, battery manufacturers also have access to the market for replacements. On top of Government and vehicle manufacturer schemes to stimulate the automotive industry, this means that the motor battery market has the potential for growth over the next few years – with some experts predicting a €1 billion total for the main markets by 2014...

Close Motor Finance - 'Award of Excellence 2009'
Birmingham 9th June 2009 – The automotive and fleet sectors are still wrestling with the effects of the credit crunch which plunged the global economy into crisis last year. The release of appropriate finance is crucial to the long-term revitalization of the market and a return to generous turnovers and healthy profits. As such, the Institute of Transport Management (ITM) has been analysing the organisations currently operating in the motor finance sector, in order to identify those which are doing most to ensure that suitable credit is available at dealership level, thus feeding revenue into the motor industry in its time of need. Subsequent to the investigations of the research team and the deliberations of the Awards Committee, the Institute is pleased to bestow an ‘Award of Excellence 2009’ on Close Motor Finance for its superlative services to the sector...

Autoglass - ‘Automotive Glass Supplier 2009’
Birmingham 2nd June 2009 – Over the last few years, automotive technology has advanced significantly, and not just in terms of engines or internal gadgetry. The design and functioning of external features have also been the subject of innovation and adaptation. This includes the windscreen, a key feature of the vehicle frame which provides as much as 30 percent of the structural strength. Higher-end cars in particular have been fitted with sophisticated technology such as rain, solar and fog sensors. Companies which deal with the installation and repair of windscreens must thus be able to cope with a wide range of configurations, on a strict time scale for private motorists and fleet managers alike...

Pirelli - ‘Tyre Management Company 2009’
Birmingham 1st June 2009 – The global market for car and commercial vehicle tyres amounts to over 1 billion units per year, 70 percent of which are replacements. Whether installed by garages or vehicle manufacturers themselves, it is imperative that the tyres are of a high enough quality to meet performance and safety standards - for the sake of the drivers, vehicle owners and other road users. With a proliferation of tyre manufacturers on the market offering an array of products, it becomes necessary to select a reliable supplier from among many...

Green Flag - 'UK Roadside Assistance Company 2009’
Birmingham 26th May 2009 – With more than 30 million vehicles on UK roads travelling around 36 billion miles every year, there is a massive scope for accidents and breakdowns. Despite the efforts of environmentalist groups and political parties, there is little chance of a decline in the number of either private or corporate vehicles. With this in mind, it is vitally important that both ordinary motorists and fleet operators are protected against the inconvenience and cost of mishaps on the road. The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) has been monitoring the performance of companies involved in this segment of the transport industry in order to accredit those which are offering the highest quality services. The Institute is thus pleased to announce that the ‘UK Roadside Assistance Company 2009’ Award goes to Green Flag.

q.bit - ‘Best Dealership CRM System 2009’
Birmingham 1st May 2009 – The automotive industry has suffered difficult times over the past year, with customers reluctant to make large purchases during a recession, and manufacturers and dealerships struggling to keep afloat. The Government scrappage scheme promises to improve the situation somewhat, but dealers must be ready to seize the opportunities available to them and take proactive steps to help themselves. By enhancing their management of sales prospects through investment in effective IT support, dealers can make a significant difference to profitability...

Quartix - 'Vehicle Tracking Solutions 2009'
Birmingham 15th April 2009 - For fleets owners and operators the challenges of running a fleet have become crystallised in the economic downturn which is hitting the transport industry and business as a whole. In order to tackle the issue of expenditure in such a climate, businesses must work extra hard to iron out inefficiencies in operating procedures and streamline the activities of each fleet unit, keeping a check on driver and vehicle performance. By eliminating excessive speed, idling, unnecessary diversions and personal use of company vehicles, fleet operators can improve delivery times, reduce fuel consumption and pare costs down to the minimum...

Shell Helix - 'Best Automotive Lubricant Range 2009'
Birmingham 2nd April 2009 - As the automotive market is brought to its knees in the current recession, with new vehicle sales at their lowest in years, companies which develop and manufacture high quality aftermarket products can benefit from increased vehicle retention and uptake of used vehicles. Both private motorists and fleet operators are seeking to avoid the significant outlay of new vehicle purchases, even at recession prices, and this means that existing units needs to be kept in good condition – to increase their working life and sell-on value as well as to maintain acceptable levels of driver safety and comfort...

Enterprise Rent-A-Car - ‘Corporate Car Rental Company 2009’
Birmingham 24th March 2009… Fleet managers and company car drivers require reliable, flexible rental services from their suppliers, and in these days of economic hardship are paying special attention to associated outlays. TOTAL - ‘UK Fuel Card of the Year 2009’
Birmingham 11th February 2009 – Oil prices may have declined since the record highs of 2008, but fuel costs are still a major cause of concern for businesses in the fleet and logistics sectors. Considering that fuel is one of the main sources of expenditure for fleet operators, it makes sense to regulate consumption by means of a controlled yet flexible system. Fuels cards represent the best method for fleet managers to monitor fuel use by drivers, cutting back on unnecessary expenditure, preventing misappropriation and stretching the fuel budget further...

Budget Rent a Car - ‘UK Car Rental Company 2008’
Birmingham 21st July 2008 - The car rental market worldwide is primarily dominated by the larger companies operating within the industry who together control over 90 percent of the market. Like every other industry, car rental operators are fretting about rate stagnancy and severely squeezed margins, while also suffering from massive increases in fuel costs with no alleviation in sight. This situation is compounded by the increasing sophistication of rental customers who are demanding more competitive services in the form of top quality vehicles, wide availability, impressive customer service and greater efficiency.

Inchcape Fleet Solutions - 'UK Fleet Managment Company 2009'
Birmingham 5th March 2009 - The management of vehicle fleets is a complex and potentially costly business, laden with legislative, environmental, technological and financial burdens. Fleet managers have to work hard to keep ahead of rising costs, and as a result many call on the services of fleet management specialists to further squeeze down costs and keep the fleet viable. The Institute of Transport Management (ITM) investigates this area of the fleet sector on an ongoing basis, tracking those companies whose commercial performance shows the success of their offerings to the market...

ING Car Lease - 'Contract Hire Company 2009' Award
Birmingham 2nd March 2009 - The effective operation of vehicle fleets depends on careful financial management to counter cost pressures and keep the fleet viable. Contract hire enables businesses to avoid the burden of fleet ownership while improving cash flow and financial control. However, quality of service varies widely between hire companies, a factor which represents a significant risk to businesses which need to secure the use of a considerable number of vehicles at the same time as protecting their financial health...

Aon Rental Business Services - ‘Rental Fleet Insurance Specialist 2009’
Birmingham February 19th 2009 – In the straightened financial circumstances now confronting the economy, rental companies are under increasing pressure to strip away all costs which are not fundamental to the running of a fleet. Considering that 10,000 driving incidents are reported in the UK every day, accident related expenditure can represent a serious cost risk for rental businesses, one which has the potential to throw carefully planned budgets out of line...

Aon Rental Business Services - ‘Risk Management Specialist 2009’
Birmingham February 19th 2009 – Operating a rental fleet is without doubt a risky business, with companies in danger of paying the cost of careless driving by motorists who do not own and may be unfamiliar with the cars they are driving. With so many cars on UK roads – at the last count, 30 million – it comes as no surprise to hear that 10,000 driving incidents of varying severity are reported each day. In the uncertain economic times ahead, it is vital for businesses to eliminate as much risk as possible, and in the field of vehicle rental, that means risk management, claims cost control and insurance...

Glasurit - 'Innovation Award 2009'
Birmingham 4th February 2009 – As the new vehicle market crumbles, industry figures are predicting potentially large gains in the aftermarket sector as fleet managers and private motorists retain existing vehicles for longer and hence begin to channel greater expenditure into repairs and general maintenance. However, the success of bodyshops and repair outlets is dependent upon the performance of businesses supplying products and services to that segment of the industry.

Mapfre Abraxas - ‘Motor Industry Company of the Year 2009’
There is no doubt that the automotive industry has been severely affected by the transnational economic downtown which is assailing businesses across the board. Vehicle manufacturers are downsizing and dealers are struggling to attract business from customers who have become fearful of making sizable purchases. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) recently reported a 36.8 percent fall in new car registrations in November, bringing the number of units down to 100,333 for the month and 2,023,104 for the year to date (down 10.7 percent)...

Autologic Diagnos - ‘Best Diagnostic Solutions Supplier 2009’
Birmingham 9th September 2008 – The aftermarket sector is a crucial component of the automotive industry as a whole, encompassing as it does all the services a vehicle may require after leaving the manufacturer – that is, parts supply, repair and servicing. The sector thus incorporates a wide variety of companies: tyre specialists, fast-fit centres, independent garages and, of course, technology and equipment suppliers such as Diagnos.co.uk. Since demand in the aftermarket sector is directly linked to the turnover of vehicles in the automotive industry, companies involved in the aftermarket business are currently being presented with greater commercial opportunity as automotive manufacturing struggles through a slow-down. Consumers shunning new vehicles are faced with the task of maintaining their existing cars – meaning that they must call upon aftermarket companies to provide innovative parts, accessories and support services.

Junair - ‘Innovation in Automotive Refinishing 2009’
Birmingham 27th November 2008 - Quality and reliability are at the forefront of the needs of fleet manager when it comes to aftermarket care. In real terms, if components are not up to scratch, or deadlines are not met, the ramifications for the transport industry in general can be disastrous. Therefore when companies display excellence within the aftermarket industry, it is in the interest of all who work in Transport to congratulate those who excel beyond all expectations. It is hoped that this will create a culture where organisations will be encouraged to push the boundaries of their respective industries, increasing both professionalism and efficiency in what has already become a very competitive sector.

Carlyle Finance - ‘UK Finance & Insurance Specialist 2009’ Award
Birmingham 13th November 2008 - Finance plays a crucial role in the successful operation of a dealership: Dealers need working capital finance to fund operations and depend on their financial partners to give them the push they need to increase sales.

Volkswagen wins 'Fleet Car of the Year 2009' Award
Birmingham 6th November 2008 – The fleet sector - like the automotive industry as a whole - is struggling in the midst of the global downturn, with new car sales dropping by 7.3 percent in the last month. As fleet sales normally make up around half of the new car market, difficulties within this sphere massively affect the entire automotive industry. The decline in fleet business can be attributed to cost-cutting by companies which are attempting to fend off the worst of the threatened recession as well as to cope with changes in VED. Fleet operators are delaying vehicle acquisitions, extending existing leases and offloading ‘excess’ units...

Exide Technologies - ‘Aftermarket Innovation Award 2009’ Award
Birmingham 6th October 2008 – Over the last few years the frequency of battery replacement has decreased as new technologies have extended battery life; improvements in both design and manufacture mean that batteries last on average 4/5 years against 2/3 years just over 10 years ago. Lead calcium and silver plate batteries are replacing lead antimony, resulting in companies being able to offer extended guarantee periods. Longer life, however, equals reduced market size and this is compounded by increased price pressure due to market over-capacity.

essential.genius - 'Innovation in Online Training 2009’
Birmingham 7th October 2008 - The optimisation of employees’ performance is a growing concern for the industry as a whole; investment in innovative and effective training methods is essential to enable employees and employers alike to handle the increasingly competitive working environment. Thus the Institute of Transport Management set out to identify those companies which are responding to the opportunities and challenges on both the demand and supply sides of the market for skills in the transport and manufacturing sectors...

Nissan wins 'Light Commercial Vehicle Manufacturer 2009’ Award

Birmingham 2nd October 2008 - There was record demand for new vans in the UK last year, but a drop in heavy truck registrations. According to statistics from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), van registrations rose 3.2 percent to a record 337,741 units. The figure - boosted by the growth of the online retail delivery industry - easily beat the previous record volume of 329,599 set in 2004. However, the figures for all commercial vehicles for the latter half of 2008 have shown a significant decrease and this has led many manufacturers to scale back production. Yet Nissan is one Company which is committed to bucking the trend and targeting an increase in sales over the next few years.

VT Training - 'Automotive Training Company 2008’
According to the Institute of Transport Management’s research into the fleet and automotive sector, the primary aims of businesses in the UK are pretty are: to improve profitability; to increase turnover and grow market share; to become the ‘Best in Class’; to reduce costs; and to improve health and safety in the workplace. All this depends on one crucial factor - that is, to have the best team in place to do the job. Recent reports, however, are showing that skill shortages and high staff turnover figures are having a significant effect on the automotive industry’s ability to compete effectively and achieve its goals.

Garmin - 'Innovation in Fleet Management 2007'
Growth is a word most closely associated with transport today and projected figures forecast a 24 percent increase in passenger traffic demand over the next while - with the demand for the transport of goods within the European Union alone expected to increase by 38% before the year 2013. To deal with the need for the efficient and effect movement of people and goods vehicles, we are looking more and more to intelligently linked traffic systems.

Grant Thornton - 'Automotive Service Solutions Company 2008'
The past few years have been marked with a dramatic increase in the number of automotive businesses going bust. The situation is not surprising given the challenges confronting motor traders: Increasing competition from abroad, higher costs, emerging technologies and increasingly sophisticated consumers are all contributing to challenging economic conditions in the automotive retailing industry. To keep pace with change the UK industry must be flexible in how it reacts to these challenges: For some, debt restructuring and regular operational reviews can play a major part. For others, difficult trading conditions throw up opportunities with many companies making their most successful acquisitions during difficult markets.

Armchair Group wins 'Customers Service Solutions Company 2008'
They say first impressions count and a bad first impression may also be the last contact a potential customer may have with an automotive retailer if the phone goes unanswered. And when the phone is answered you want the receptionist to portray a high level of confidence and professionalism but sometimes, that may not always be the case.
